Lala's Language Misadventures

Because I’m too lazy to sift through Google Japan to find it and Omniglot doesn’t have the translation. This is NOT a proper translation, this is what I managed to glean from using UniLang’s Ainu for Beginners. The Japanese text is from Omniglot.

Order goes:

1. Ainu

1.  テエタ アイヌアナク シネプ イタㇰ イェ。

そのころ、人類はみな同じことばを話していました。

Long ago, man spoke all one language.

2. ヒガシ ワ アルキ ワバビロンエシタン。タアニン アコホラリ。

人口がしだいに増えると、人々は東の方に移って行きました。　こうしてバビロンの地に平原を見つけ、大ぜいの人がそこに住みついたのです。

They came from the east and found the land of Shinar (Babylon), and there they lived.

3. タワーアンカル、 イェ。アンタワー カムイモシㇼタオマン。

やがて大都市を建設しようという話が持ち上がりました。　永遠に残る記念碑として、天にも届くような塔の神殿を造り、自分たちの力を見せてやろうというのです。

Let’s build a tower, they said, a tower that reaches the heavens.

4. コタンアンカル、 イェ。 ポロ コタンアンカル、 イェ。

「こうやって一致団結すれば、あちこちに散らされる心配もなくなるというものだ。」　そう豪語すると、人々はよく焼いた堅いれんがをうずたかく積み上げ、アスファルトを集めてモルタル代わりにしました。

And let us make a town, they said; a great town.

5. サンタ カムイ アルキ ワ アイヌ ネプ イキ ヌカル。

神様は降りて来て、人間どもが造っている町と塔をご覧になりました。

And God came down to see what man was doing.

6. シネプ アイヌワ シネプ イタㇰ、 カムイ アルキ イェ。ピリカ  ヘンネ　ネ。

「いやはや、なんということだ。　同じことばを使い、政治的にも一致して事にあたれば、人間はこれだけの事をやすやすとやり遂げてしまう。　この分だと、あとでどんな事をしでかすか、わかったものじゃない。　何でもやってのけるだろう。

They are one people and one language, God said, and it is not good.

7. カムイ アルキ イタㇰコイキ。タネ オヤイタㇰ イェワ ヘンネエラムアン。

こうなったら地上へ降りて行って、彼らが違ったことばを話すようにしてしまおう。　そうすれば、互いに何を言っているかわからなくなる。」

So God took away their language. Now they spoke different languages and did not understand each other.

8. カムイ アルキ アナク アイヌ カル オマン。アイヌコタンヘンネタ テル。

こうして、神様は人間を世界の各地に散らしました。　もう都市建設はできません。

God sent them away, and they did not build their town.

9. カムイ アルキ イタㇰコイキワ カムイ アルキ アイヌ カル オマンクス バベル〔「コンラン」〕アナク レカラ。

この都の名がバベル〔「混乱」の意〕と呼ばれたのは、このためです。　つまり、神様がたくさんの国語を与えて人間を混乱させ、各地に広く散らしたのが、このバベルの地だったのです。

And it was named Babel (meaning “confusion”) because there God took away their language and sent them away over the earth.

In case you’ve never seen my personal blog or my crazy language aspirations, I aspire to be a hyperpolyglot. I’ve read a lot about polyglots and hyperpolyglots and they’ve all used a technique very similar to this article’s. This is the technique I’m going to employ from now on. I hope it helps you all as well.
